Someday my prince will come

The Wynton Kelly heard here (1959-1961) was at the peak of his fruitful collaboration

with Miles Davis in the trumpeter's celebrated quintet, which also featured Paul

Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and the inimitable John Coltrane. Therefore, it is truly

interesting to hear Kelly as the protagonist on these recordings, displaying his own

personality and even playing some of his own compositions. The tracks compiled

here were not the first trio recordings by Wynton Kelly (who was born in Jamaica,

West Indies on December 2, 1931 -although some sources state that he was born

in Brooklyn, New York- and died in Toronto, Canada, on April 12, 1971). His first

explorations with the trio format had taken place in New York, on July 25, 1951,

backed by the great Oscar Pettiford on bass (Franklin Skeete replaced him on some

tunes) and Lee Abrams on drums. The album was titled Piano Interpretations. It

would be followed by some more trio sessions in 1951. Then there was a long gap

before his next trio recordings, which he made in 1958.
