Art Pepper was not only one of the greatest alto sax players the jazz world has ever known, he was also one of the few to emerge in the immediate post-bop era who did not fall under the spell of Charlie Parker. Art developed his fluent and individual style through his deep admiration for tenor sax maestro Lester Young. This 40 track double CD traces his emergence and development, playing with Stan Kenton and His Orchestra (1943, 1947, 1950-1951), accompanying scat vocalist Babs Gonzales (1949), with Shorty Rogers & His Giants (1951) and leading his own quartet (1952). The accompanying 16 page booklet tells his story and includes a discography of the recordings. Proper. 2006
