Glauber Rocha
The second instalment in cult Brazilian director Glauber Rocha's trilogy, which begins with 'Black God White Devil' (1964) and concludes with 'Antonio das Mortes' (1969). The films are classic examples of the Brazilian 'Cinemo Novo' movement, in which young directors set out to challenge political and artistic expectations, often focusing themes of poverty and politics. In the fictitious Latin American country of Eldorado, the idealistic and anarchist poet Paulo Martins (Jardel Filho) lies on his deathbed and reflects upon the great political struggle of his life: an ongoing and unresolved conflict between the power-hungry madness of the elite and the blind submission of the masses.
