Why are butterflies colored so brightly? And how do they use these colors to avoid predators? This multi-activity mini-course introduces children K-5 to how butterflies and moths are different from each other, and to how they survive in nature. This mini-course includes an illustrated story-based lesson, as well as games, activities, and projects that appeal to all types of learners. Activities include a card matching game to help children distinguish butterflies from moths and templates that allow children to create their own paper insects. In addition, it includes a movement-based game that shows children how to use flash, blending, and warning coloration to escape predators. The mini-course also includes links to online resources to identify local butterflies and moths, as well as research journal and field journal pages to make observations. The mini-course requires only a few common household items to complete the activities: string, tape, scissors, pencil, crayons, three opaque cups, lightweight cardboard, and T-shirts of different colors. Upon completing the mini-course, children will gain new concept badges for their Science Tool Kit ? including diurnal, nocturnal, proboscis, blending coloration, and flash coloration.
