Emergency and Quest for Total Revolution in India

Emergency of 1975 in India came as a thunderous blow to democratic traditions of this country. The illegitimate and unconstitutional ways in which it was enforced shocked everyone and democracy came in danger. All the democratic institutions were subverted to hide the misdeeds and malpractices of a very small ruling group. Legendary freedom fighter and veteran political leader Jayprakash Narayan led the movement to oppose these dictatorial tendencies and awaken the conscience of nation in those darkest days of Indian democracy. He wanted to make a society free from inequality and injustice and he called upon the nation to strive for 'Total Revolution'. Total Revolution was a dream to be materialized through the means of democratic principles. Janata Party government which came after era of Emergency compromised with the very principles of Total Revolution and took the similar steps as adopted by its predecessor. The followers of JP put aside his teachings and indulged themselves in the blind lust for Power. Today many leaders of JP movement are indulged in various scams and criminal cases and they are completely silent on the issues related to the rights of the masses of this country.
