Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) is one of the great German poets, and The North Sea is his collection of Romantic, lyrical poems (1825-27).



This edition contains a translation by Emma Lazarus of The North Sea, an introduction to Heinrich Heine's poetry and German Romanticism, illustrations and a bibliography.

Christian Johann Heinrich Heine was born in Düsseldorf on December 13, 1797 and died in Paris on February 17, 1856. Some of Heine's best-known works were Briefe aus Berlin, Almansor, William Ratcliff, Lyrisches Intermezzo, Reisebilder, The North Sea, Book of Songs, Der Salon, Shakespeares Mädchen und Frauen, New Poems, Atta Troll: Ein Sommernachtstraum, Der Doktor Faust, and Lutezia. Heine's Leider were set to music by, among others, Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Peter Tchaikovsky, and Richard Wagner.
