The yellow wallpaper
Charlotte Perkins Gilman
This journal chronicles the thoughts of a woman who is sent to a country home for forced rest by her husband and doctor who think the solitude will cure her from her dislike of marriage and motherhood. She creates her own reality outside of the yellow wallpaper of the bedroom in which she is imprisoned and records her thoughts in a secret journal. Through this journal she describes the importance of personal freedom and self-empowerment as her mental health continues to fail.
