Little Dorrit
Charles Dickens
Little Dorrit, the eleventh novel by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), is the second in a series of three political and social novels, published in monthly serials, twenty issues in nineteen publications, from December 1855 to June 1857. It is the most political of the Dickens novels and also the one with the most symbolic structure: it is in fact divided into two books, the first entitled "Poverty" and the second "Wealth", each counting ten issues published at the price Of 1 shilling. A satirical work, he denounces the institutions of the kingdom, especially that of the prison for debts where the debtors are locked up without being able to work, in this case the prison of Marshalsea, which Dickens knows well because his father was there Retained. Dickens' other denunciations deal with the insecurity of industrial workers, the conditions of their employment, the bureaucracy of the Department of Finance (HM Treasury), the technocratic jargon that Dickens lists in Book I, Chapter 10, Famous list of Circumlocution Office, the "Ministry of Circonlocutions," as well as separation and lack of communication between social classes.
