William Gilpin
Clergyman, schoolmaster and writer on aesthetics, William Gilpin (1724–1804) published a series of works recording his observations on the picturesque across British landscapes. This two-volume work, which appeared in 1786, describes his travels in 1772, principally in the Lake District, an inspirational place for poets and artists.
