The Provost was ironic about the profession of a small town businessman and politician. It is set in Irvine, Scotland, and follows the title life of James Pawkie. He started out as a humble apprentice, then grew into his own store, and eventually acquired the majority of Irvine stock. At the same time, he began to participate in local politics in the city hall. Eventually, he was promoted to rector of the highest position in local power, where he used his position and wealth to manipulate Irvine residents into bidding. James Pawkie is the prince of his kingdom.
