Kwame's Journey

? KWAME'S JOURNEY ?

This book follows the journey of eight - year old Kwame in his migration from Guyana, South America to the USA in the late 1980's.

It highlights the culture Kwame came from and the void of the new culture that resulted in culture shock. As Kwame tries to assimilate the new culture and accommodate to his new environment, there are numerous challenges: language barriers, accent, social norms. These challenges result in countless suspensions.

Kwame was no longer, King of the Masquerade, as he was in his home village.

He was now, The Suspension King.

School fights are numerous at Elementary school but become less at middle and taper off by High school when Kwame's talent for football is discovered and he becomes a Champion on the Football Field. When Kwame goes off to college on a football scholarship, he is invited to his old Elementary School to deliver the Charge to the Graduates. This book is highly recommended for children in Grades 4-8. It challenges educators to meet the needs of children who migrate and to nurture the strengths they bring to the classroom.
