My point of departure in this research project is the various experiences and learning attained during my study as a student, teacher as well as a member of Ugandan society. For the time I was a student and a teacher in both secondary and vocational schools, I learnt much regarding teaching and learning. This exposure empowered me to understand the nature of teaching and learning in most Ugandan institutions which reflects a teacher as a sole source of knowledge imparted to the learners who must cram, memorise and reproduce it in examinations. Through a number of studies, I have realised that the nature of teaching and learning that carpentry students in Uganda are subjected to cannot make them competent in their vocations. It makes them dependent on their teachers for virtually everything yet the society expects them to be more self reliant, self employers who can contribute to the social and economic growth of the country. This book therefore highlights the possible strategies that teachers and other can employ to improve the practice
