When Carol Milford marries Dr. Will Kennicott, he convinces her to leave the fast city life she always have known in Minneapolis and relocate to his hometown of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota. Carol is taken aback by the little town's backward and old ways and unpleasant, unpretty, and understimated appearance. She soon sets about to "improve, change, and beautify" it.
